TEAM SPARTAN NETWORK

FEBRUARY 2007 - NEWSLETTER # 07-26

TRAINING NEWS

Team Spartan and the DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division started the 2007 training season with the SHOT SHOW in Orlando, Florida last month. The DSA booth was flooded virtually non-stop with industry personnel inquiring about DSA products and and Team Spartan training! This SHOT SHOW was DSA's biggest yet with over $ 300,000 in product sales and over 300 rifle units sold! The new Spartan Operator Rifles were smoking HOT with over 160 units sold in their debut!

Lots of new products released for 2007 at the SHOT SHOW with to many to name. Highlights would include Glocks new SF .45 caliber pistol, which in my opinion is a little short of meeting it’s purpose, as the grip reduction on it is relatively insignificant. The best option for grip reduction on the full size Glock is still Robar’s grip reduction program. Contact our corporate sponsor Robbie Barrkman at Robar for more information.

Robar Grip Reduction

Magpul’s new MASADA rifle was definitely one of the rifles that took the SHOT SHOW by storm! An interesting concept rifle that incorporates many of Magpul’s accessory features with a very close resemblance to the FN SCAR rifle. I did not have an opportunity to fire this weapon at the show; however my staff and I are looking forward to firing a sample at the upcoming IALEFI conference coming up in May. It will be interesting to see how this rifle performs. Contact our corporate sponsor Doug Smith at Magpul for more information.

For operators that are looking at upgrading to a piston driven configuration with their AR-15 / M-4 rifle, you may want to look at LWRC’s self-regulating short stroke piston system. I was very impressed with their product presentation, quality of materials used and technological advancement in this field. We will be testing & evaluating a copy later on this year as we seek better technology to replace the current POF piston driven uppers we are using. I’ve not been impressed at all with the performance of the POF piston driven upper and was surprised when my instructors and I were able to cause one to seize in less then 750 rounds at the IALEFI conference last year in West Palm Beach, Florida. Contact Paul Bromley at LWRC for more information.

HI VIZ sights has exploded into the law enforcement products industry with their new fiber optic sights for duty pistols. CEO Philip Howe and President Kent Heitz of HI VIZ met with

Team Spartan staff instructors and have provided sample copies for us to test and evaluate. This new iron sight offers a smaller, recessed fiber optic which is encased in a tough, durable clear plastic shroud to protect the sight. No more front sight glare washout. Front sight outline clarity is very distinct with this new sight. We’re going to put them to work at the Spartan classes this year and see how they perform.

Contact Kent Heitz for more information.

Another Team Spartan corporate sponsor, Sling System

(IBD Products) has released their new law enforcement & military operations glove, Shooter-2. An impressive light weight, durable and comfortable operator’s glove that fits snug and is machine washable! We have been issued several pairs for test and evaluation and will evaluate how they perform in live-fire training and force-on-force training with Simunition FX marking rounds. Contact Jeff or Javier for more information.

For those of you who are working with the AR-15 / M-4 weapon system, if you don’t have one yet, you need to get an MGI D-Fender “D-Ring” for use in your bolt group. This product fits behind the extractor and increases extractor spring force by 4-times! I’m a firm believer in this product and have installed them in all of the DS-AR training rifles that are issued to students in our classes. President of ITOA, Chief Jeff Chudwin wrote an excellent article on this product, which is archived on the MGI website. I briefly chatted with Mack Gwinn of MGI about the D-Ring and their recoil reduction buffer and he insists that everyone needs one in their rifle ASAP. I agree! Contact Mack Gwinn at MGI for more product information.

Another interesting product that caught my eye was the Cammenga EasyMag. A very interesting hi-capacity magazine for the AR-15 / M-4 that has a sliding sleeve on the front of the magazine which allows the shooter to open the front of the magazine and load it by dropping cartridges into the open magazine tube! Very fast to load, but more importantly, ease of unloading. No more knuckle busting, fighting to get rounds out of the magazine. Just another option to consider, if you don’t use a LULA. My only contention about this magazine is that it is parts specific and is not compatible with Magpul followers or Ranger floor plates. Cammenga is sending us some samples to beat on in our rifle classes; we’ll see how they perform. Contact John Cammenga for more information.

CAMMENGA EASYMAG

I’ll finish up with one more product, the Noveske KX3 flash suppressor. Although it does not have the cosmetic appeal that NIPAS SWAT operators would give high grades to on their “CDI” meter (chicks dig it), this flash suppressor is amazing! Muzzle flip during recoil is considerably reduced when firing, especially during full-auto or burst application with 5.56 and .308! What I like most about this product is redirection of noise and concussive blast away from the shooter. This may not be too much of an issue outdoors, but try taking a .308 SA58 OSW with an 11” barrel into a shoothouse or enclosed area and start firing bursts and you’ll see why this product is a necessity! This product offers a lot, with minimal increase in overall length of the rifle. Check out the live-fire demo videos on Noveske’s website. Impressive!

Team Spartan is proud to announce the debut of 5 new training courses for 2007!

Team Spartan defensive tactics instructors Aaron Cunningham and Sung Joo Lee bring a series

of intensity driven Defensive Duty Knife Courses to life with reality based training in the

justifiable use and application of the law enforcement duty knife.

The Defensive Duty Knife Program is based on the internationally recognized Filipino martial art Tacosa Serrada Eskrima, a close quarter armed combatives system that has been integrated into emergency defensive use of the law enforcement duty knife. This program also focuses on legal issues and the justifiable use of the duty knife within the continuum of force.

These classes filled quickly last year so be sure to get your ILEETA registration in early! Last year’s conference sold out fast – and from what Ed Nowicki is saying from ILEETA, this year’s conference is going to sell out as well. We’ll see you at the conference!

International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors - Annual Training Conference

DSA, Inc. has once again generously donated an SA58 .308 rifle in support of the IALEFI

Scholarship Fund and Police Memorial Fund. This rifle will be raffled at the conference banquet

on May 24th, 2007 with all proceeds going to the support of these charities. See you in Texas!

Illinois Police Association - Area Combat and Bullseye Matches

Team Spartan and the NSPPL are proud to announce the return of the Illinois Police Association (IPA) combat and bullseye matches in the Chicagoland area. After a several year hiatus due to the anti-gun political agenda of the Chicago Police Department banning IPA and NRA shooting sports events at Chicago Police Department city ranges, we have been able to revive these excellent

law enforcement firearms training events locally through a coordinated effort with our new host

agency, the Harvey Police Department.

The following dates have been scheduled for IPA sanctioned combat and bullseye matches at

the Harvey Police Department Range in Harvey, Illinois:

Top ranking shooters for each match will receive trophies, with the overall top 20 shooters of

the year receiving the State of Illinois - Governors Twenty Award at the end of the shooting

season. The 2007 IPA shooting season will conclude in October with the IPA Top Gun Match in

Pontiac, Illinois.

National Tactical Officers Association - Annual Training Conference

Team Spartan and the DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division are proud to announce that

we will have a vendor booth on display at the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA)

24th Annual Tactical Operations Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

September 16th – 21st, 2007.

The DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division will also be presenting the

DS Arms FAL SA58 Rifle Armorer Course at this year’s conference as well as a live-fire weapons vendor demonstration of the SA58 rifle, SA58 OSW, DS-AR rifle and the Brugger & Thomet

TP9SF 9mm sub-machinegun. The armorers course will fill quickly, so be sure to stop by the

DS Arms vendor booth to register. Registration will be limited to 20 students.

The live-fire vendor display will be open to all conference participants that are interested in

test firing and evaluating DS Arms weapon systems. Be sure to stop by the DS Arms booth

early to register for the armorers class. We’ll see you at the conference.

Police Training Institute - 7th Annual Combat Challenge Match

The Police Training Institute will hold their 7th Annual Combat Challenge Match on

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 at the Tactical Training Center in Champaign, Illinois. This

match consists of 6 challenging courses of fire that you can re-shoot as many times as you like.

Your best scores are posted for ranking in each stage for trophies and prizes and your overall combined score is used to determine the Top Gun shooter for the match. The match consists

of 4 pistol stages, 1 carbine stage and 1 shotgun stage.

All long guns and long gun ammunition will be provided by PTI for the match. This is truly one

of the most exciting matches I have ever shot and I guarantee that you will find these courses

of fire challenging and fun! Plan on spending the whole day shooting and socializing with

officers from other agencies at this match, and bring lots of ammo!!!

3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Charity Match

Mark your calendars – the 3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Match is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, 2007 and will be hosted once again this year at the Harvey Police

Department Range in Harvey, Illinois.

We had over 180 participants from 10 different states compete in last years match, making it

the largest match of it’s kind in the country! We are expecting over 200 shooters for this years

match, and our goal is to collect 500 toys for 2007.

Last years event generated over 300 donated toys for the United States Marine Corps Reserves

Toys for Tots Toy Drive. We had over 70 sponsors donate 150 prizes valued at over

$15,000.00, which included 12 firearms as prizes.

The value of our prize table for 2007 will exceed last year’s, and we plan to have at least 15 firearms on the prize table for this year’s event! If you liked what you seen last year, this year’s event will be even bigger and better! There will be a larger vendor area, more prizes, more trophies and lots of shooting! Bring a friend and lots of toys!!!

In addition to running the Combat Challenge Match, we will also have several industry

sponsored side matches for participants to compete in. The matches will include:

  • Beretta Challenge – pistol / carbine match on steel (Beretta weapons TBA)
  • Revenge of the Pepper Poppers – pistol match (modified) vendor - TBA
  • Shotgun Run – shotgun match (modified) manufacturer of shotgun – TBA
  • Action Target - Man vs. Man Steel Challenge – pistol match on steel

If you missed the last 2 matches we have run, you definitely don’t want to miss this year’s event!

Stay tuned for more information about this years match.
