TEAM SPARTAN NETWORK

OCTOBER 2007 - NEWSLETTER # 07-34

TRAINING NEWS
September was another exciting month for Team Spartan as we finished the Summer training session strong. As we move into Fall, we drive on into the final training phase of the 2007 training season with several excellent classes scheduled. Visit the Team Spartan training schedule today and sign up for one of our year end classes before we break for the holidays.

In between presenting and attending training classes, we encourage our instructors to participate in various shooting competitions and 3-gun matches to evaluate their skill level. Last month,

Team Spartan staff had the opportunity to compete in two excellent 3-gun events, and posted some very impressive scores, demonstrating shooting skills with pistol, shotgun and carbine.

The first match we competed in for September was the 7th Annual PTI Combat Challenge Match, which was held at the PTI Tactical Training Center in Champaign, Illinois on September 22nd, 2007. In addition to participating in the match, Team Spartan also supported the event by returning as a match sponsor for the 3rd year in a row.

This match is one of my favorites, and I have competed in all seven, returning this year as the 3-time defending Top Gun champion! Competition was fierce as 45 competitors competed for the 2007

Top Gun Award in 6 challenging courses of fire; 4 handgun stages, 1 shotgun stage and 1 carbine stage.

When the smoke cleared, Team Spartan members placed 2nd thru 5th place with Aaron Thomas posting a smoking overall score of 32.74 for all 6 stages and earning the Top Gun crown for 2007!

Aaron put on a great show, and having had the opportunity to see him grow as a shooter and competitor over the last several years at this event - this was definitely his year! Great job and congratulations! You have definitely set the bar for next year's match!

Then it was off to the 2nd Annual Cops vs. Cowboys 3-gun Match on September 30th, 2007 hosted by the Oak Park Sportsman's Club in Plainfield, Illinois. Team Spartan returned as the overall reigning team champion and overall law enforcement team champion, defending both titles successfully against the Cowboys and Open Class shooters.

All stages included engaging steel and paper targets with pistol, shotgun & carbine and required
A LOT of movement and shooting on the move! Team Spartan members blazed through the stages with an impressive balance of speed and accuracy with all weapon systems, and when the dust settled, placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th overall out of 60 competitors!

The Cowboys have sworn that they will be back next year with a new strategy to beat the Cops..... and Team Spartan will be there waiting for them!

This is a great match, and event coordinator Ed Topp did a fantastic job putting it together! If you like shooting 3-gun, you'll have a great time at this match. Keep checking the Team Spartan training schedule and newsletter for updates on next year's match.

Team Spartan is proud to announce the debut of 6 new training courses for 2007!

Team Spartan defensive tactics instructors Aaron Cunningham and Sung Joo Lee bring a series

of intensity driven Defensive Duty Knife Courses to life with reality based training in the

justifiable use and application of the law enforcement duty knife.

The Defensive Duty Knife Program is based on the internationally recognized Filipino martial art Tacosa Serrada Eskrima, a close quarter armed combatives system that has been integrated into emergency defensive use of the law enforcement duty knife. This program also focuses on legal issues and the justifiable use of the duty knife within the continuum of force.

UPCOMING EVENTS
3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Charity Match

Mark your calendars – the 3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Match is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, 2007 and will be hosted once again this year at the Harvey Police

Department Range in Harvey, Illinois.

We had over 180 participants from 10 different states compete in last years match, making it

the largest match of it’s kind in the country! We are expecting over 200 shooters for this years

match, and our goal is to collect 500 toys for 2007.

Last years event generated over 300 donated toys for the United States Marine Corps Reserves

Toys for Tots Toy Drive. We had over 70 sponsors donate 150 prizes valued at over

$15,000.00, which included 12 firearms as prizes.

The value of our prize table for 2007 will exceed last year’s, and we plan to have at least 15 firearms on the prize table for this year’s event! If you liked what you seen last year, this year’s event will be even bigger and better! There will be a larger vendor area, more prizes, more trophies and lots of shooting! Bring a friend and lots of toys!!!

In addition to running the Combat Challenge Match, we will also have several industry

sponsored side matches for participants to compete in. The matches will include:

  • Beretta Challenge – Pistol / carbine match on steel - Sponsored by Beretta
All 9mm pistols, carbines and frangible ammunition will be provided for this match.
  • Revenge of the Pepper Poppers – Pistol match on steel - Sponsored by Smith & Wesson
